Starting a GIII
The Glasair III is a hot rodded version of the Glasair RG. With 300hp, a top speed over 300mph, and the ability to pull +6 G's, its performance rivals that of a P51 Mustang. When I was presented with the opportunity to build one of the greatest piston powered aircraft ever designed, I couldn't resist
Savanna and I traveled to McKinney, TX to retrieve #3265 (still need to come up with a good tail number). We flew in commercial, rented a U-haul and headed over to Aero Country Airport to meet up with Kevin and the kids.
After a quick game plan talk, the kids sprung into action. They moved the wing and jig into the truck first, followed by the fuselage and other long material. They bubble wrapped all of the aluminum gear parts and loaded the engine mount, horizontal stab, and cowling last. After a morning of manual labor, we enjoyed a pizza lunch!
Once on the road we were surrounded by heavy traffic in Dallas. After getting out of the city we found a nice pace at 70mph and 7.3mpg. I felt like a real trucker! An overnight in Jackson, MS, and we were back on the road on Sunday. After 15 hours of driving we made it back to Lincolnton, NC.
I began unloading #3265 at its new home!
